Angina Travel Insurance covers you if you’re living with angina and wish to travel with peace of mind. This type of insurance covers you for medical emergencies, which is vital to prevent unexpected medical bills and give you the support you need if you have any medical problems while you are on holiday. AllClear can provide holiday insurance for people living with angina. Start your preparations as early as possible, particularly if you are planning on flying.

What is angina?

Angina is a type of chest pain or discomfort that happens when the heart muscle isn’t getting enough oxygen-rich blood. This is usually caused by narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the heart, often linked to coronary heart disease.

People with angina may experience:

  • Tightness, pressure or pain in the chest
  • Pain that spreads to the arms, neck, jaw, shoulders or back
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling tired, dizzy or slightly nauseous

Angina symptoms are often triggered when the heart has to work harder, such as during:

  • Physical activity or exercise
  • Emotional stress
  • Cold weather
  • Eating a large meal

In many cases, symptoms improve with rest or medication prescribed by your doctor.

Although angina itself is not a heart attack, it can be a warning sign that the heart isn’t getting enough blood, so it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional if you experience symptoms.

Can you get Travel Insurance if you have angina?

Yes, you absolutely can get Travel Insurance if you have angina. We specialise in providing cover for travellers living with heart conditions, and angina is one of the many medical conditions we can consider for cover.

The key requirement is that you must declare your angina during our medical screening process. This allows us to assess your individual circumstances and medical history to provide the most appropriate cover for your needs. Your cover will depend on factors such as the stability of your condition, any recent treatments, and your overall health profile.

It’s crucial to understand that failing to declare your angina will invalidate any related claims. While we cannot guarantee acceptance for everyone, our specialist approach means we can often provide cover for travellers who have been declined elsewhere. We believe everyone has the right to travel, and we’re here to help make that possible where we can, with the right protection in place.

Why do you need Travel Insurance for angina?

Many standard Travel Insurance policies may exclude pre-existing medical conditions like angina. This means that if you experience an angina-related emergency abroad, you could face significant financial exposure without proper cover.

Angina is a common heart condition in the UK. Around 2 million people in the UK are living with angina, and many continue to travel regularly. However, heart-related medical emergencies abroad can be extremely costly.

The financial impact can be costly:

  • Emergency medical treatment in the United States can cost thousands of pounds, particularly if specialist cardiac care or hospital admission is required

  • Medical repatriation to the UK can cost between £65,000 and £74,000, according to ABTA

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency procedures or extended hospital stays can quickly lead to very high medical bills

Your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) provides access to state healthcare in participating European countries, but it is not a substitute for Travel Insurance. It will not cover:

  • Medical repatriation back to the UK
  • Trip cancellation due to your condition
  • Private medical treatment
  • Lost baggage or other travel disruptions

Without specialist Travel Insurance for angina, you could be responsible for these costs yourself.

Having the right policy in place means you can travel with reassurance. Knowing you’re protected against unexpected medical expenses allows you to focus on enjoying your trip abroad.

What does Angina Travel Insurance cover?

What’s covered?

  • Medical cover AllClear policies include emergency medical cover, including angina and any other existing conditions you may have. This includes prescription medication like insulin and medical equipment
  • Cancellation and cutting your trip short – Cover for your flight and accommodation costs if you unexpectedly have to cancel before you go, or need to return home early following an emergency
  • Your baggage – Protection against the cost of stolen, damaged or lost luggage and personal possessions. You can also choose to add extra cover for gadgets to your policy.
  • Travel delays and missed departure – If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time. If you miss your flight, you’ll also be covered for accommodation and transport costs
  • Personal liability – Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away on holiday
  • All ages We think Travel Insurance should be available to as many people as possible, that’s why our Travel Insurance has no upper age limit

  • Deciding not to travel We do not provide any cover if you can travel but choose not to
  • Other regions Your Travel Insurance won’t cover you if you travel outside your chosen region, although you can contact us to upgrade your policy at any time

We tailor all our travel policies to your specific requirements, which is why we have three different levels of policy available: Gold, Gold Plus, and Platinum.

Why choose AllClear?

There can be important differences between standard Travel Insurance and specialist angina cover. While standard policies may exclude any claims related to pre-existing conditions, AllClear’s specialist approach means your declared heart condition can be considered for cover and, when accepted during medical screening, can be covered under your chosen cover level.

If angina-related claims are excluded under a policy, you could be left exposed to very high medical bills. Our policies include comprehensive medical emergency cover, repatriation services, and even replacement of essential prescribed medication, depending on the cover level you choose.

The financial risk of travelling without proper cover extends beyond medical costs. Trip cancellation, curtailment (cutting your trip short), and the stress of navigating foreign healthcare systems without support can make your holiday more difficult. With AllClear, you are in safe hands.

Had an angioplasty or stent? You can still get cover

Previous cardiac procedures, like angioplasty or stent insertion, don’t automatically prevent you from getting Travel Insurance. These procedures are included in our comprehensive medical screening process, and many of our customers travel confidently after such treatments.

The key is to be honest during the medical screening process. Our team understands these procedures and can assess your individual risk profile to provide appropriate cover. Many travellers find they can still get comprehensive protection, up to the limits of their chosen policy, even after significant cardiac interventions.

How much does Travel Insurance with angina cost?

The cost of Travel Insurance with angina depends on several personal factors that help us assess your individual circumstances.

Health factors may include the stability of your angina, any recent changes to your medication, and whether you’ve had procedures such as angioplasty or stent placement.

Trip details also affect the price of your policy, including your destination, the length of your trip and the level of cover you choose from our Gold, Gold Plus or Platinum options.

Your age is also taken into account, but it’s only one part of the overall assessment.

Specialist Travel Insurance for angina may cost more than a standard policy because it can include your heart condition. This means your policy is designed around your medical history rather than excluding it.

Declaring your condition fully helps ensure that any valid claims can be considered in line with your Policy Wording. The best way to understand the cost of cover is to get a personalised quote tailored to your health and travel plans.

Tips for travelling with angina

Travel Insurance with angina

  • Finding Travel Insurance for people who have angina can be difficult. Many standard Travel Insurance policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions. Make sure you look for a specialist angina Travel Insurance provider and declare your angina and any other medical condition. This means you can travel with complete peace of mind, knowing you are covered if you need emergency medical treatment related to your angina while you’re on holiday.
  • For travel in Europe, make sure you also have a GHIC. This entitles you to reduced-cost, and sometimes, free medical treatment. It’s not an alternative to angina Travel Insurance, though, so be sure to arrange this in addition.

Medication for angina

  • Ensure you have sufficient angina medication (preferably double your requirements in case your medication is damaged or lost) for the entire duration of your trip. When travelling with angina medication, keep a list of both the generic and brand names of each, together with your dosages.
  • See your GP or angina specialist for information on how travel jabs can affect your condition. For example, vaccines may disrupt your blood glucose control as your body makes antibodies to fight the disease that you’ve been inoculated against.

Temperature, altitude and climate

  • Temperature can have an impact on your heart condition. Avoid extreme temperatures as this can put added strain on your heart. It’s also important to avoid high altitude destinations (over 2,000 metres) as this can make you breathless and can exacerbate your angina further. Your angina medication should be kept close to hand and should not be allowed to freeze.

Air travel and angina

  • You will need to check with your medical practitioner to determine if air travel is suitable for you. Heightened airport security in recent years means that it’s essential you plan ahead if you have angina in order to avoid running into last-minute problems. If you’re crossing time zones, you may need to alter your angina medication regime. Discuss travelling with angina with your GP well in advance to allow for any adjustments to be made. It’s safe to use glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) spray while on the plane. Also, if you have a pacemaker, take your identification card with you.

What our Customers Say

Last minute cover

“Having recently been diagnosed with stable angina, my existing travel insurance company was unable to confirm cover without the underwriters’ approval. With only three days before leaving, Allclear was able provide cover immediately based on the information I had supplied. Chloe, their operator, was excellent and provided everything that was needed without delay. Would definitely recommend Allclear. They are what they advertise.”

Angina Travel Insurance FAQs

Yes, you must declare your angina during the medical screening process. Failing to declare any medical condition will invalidate related claims and could void your entire policy. Our medical screening process is designed to help ensure you get the right cover for your needs.

Yes, previous cardiac procedures like angioplasty or stent insertion don’t automatically prevent cover. These procedures are assessed during our medical screening process, and many customers with previous interventions travel with confidence under our policies.

If you experience an angina-related emergency abroad, contact our 24/7 helpline immediately. We’ll coordinate with local medical services, arrange appropriate treatment, and handle many of the administrative details. If repatriation is medically necessary and covered by your policy, we’ll usually arrange and cover the costs up to your policy limit.

No, a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is not enough if you have a heart condition such as angina.

A GHIC gives you access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries and certain other destinations, but it does not replace Travel Insurance. It only covers treatment that is considered medically necessary within the local public healthcare system.

There are several important things a GHIC does not cover:

  • Medical repatriation back to the UK

  • Private medical treatment

  • Trip cancellation if your health changes before travel

  • Lost, stolen or delayed baggage

  • Most medical costs outside Europe

For people with heart conditions, these gaps can be particularly important. Cardiac emergencies abroad can require specialist treatment or urgent repatriation, which can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Having specialist Travel Insurance that considers your heart condition helps ensure you’re protected for emergency medical expenses and repatriation.

Yes, many people with stable angina can fly, but it’s important to speak to your GP or cardiologist before travelling.

Flying is generally considered safe if your angina is well controlled, your symptoms are stable, and you haven’t had recent complications such as a heart attack or hospital admission. Your doctor can advise whether it’s safe based on your current health, recent tests and treatment.

Before flying, it’s sensible to:

  • Carry your medication in your hand luggage, including GTN spray or tablets
  • Bring enough medication for the whole trip, plus extra in case of delays
  • Allow time to move around during the flight to maintain circulation
  • Avoid heavy lifting or rushing through airports
  • Carry a doctor’s letter explaining your condition and medication

You should also arrange specialist Travel Insurance that includes your angina, subject to medical screening. This helps ensure you’re protected if you need medical treatment while abroad.

With the right preparation and medical advice, many people with angina continue to travel and fly safely.

No, flying with unstable angina is generally not recommended.

Unstable angina means your chest pain occurs unexpectedly, is worsening, or happens even when you are resting. It is considered a medical emergency and a sign that your heart may not be getting enough blood. Because of this increased risk, doctors usually advise against flying until the condition has been stabilised and fully assessed.

If you have unstable angina, you should:

  • Seek medical care immediately and follow your doctor’s advice
  • Avoid travel until your condition is stabilised
  • Speak to your cardiologist or GP before making any travel plans

Once your condition is stable and your medical team confirms it is safe to travel, you may then be able to fly. At that stage, it’s also important to arrange specialist Travel Insurance and declare your heart condition during medical screening.

If you’re unsure about your situation, always get advice from your healthcare professional before travelling.
